My Brain on Code

Flash 10 in Firefox 3.5 on Ubuntu 9.04 (64 Bit)

For several months now I have been without flash on my Ubuntu Virtual Machine at work. It doesn’t hinder me but it would be nice to have it. Finally, I got time to actually tinker around and get it working.

The Ubuntu repositories still have Firefox version 3.0 in it. I wanted to use version 3.5 so I downloaded it from here.

Extracted the contents into ~/firefox/

Now I just modified my launcher to point to the firefox binary that I downloaded.

Firefox 3.5 installed! Success! Anyways, I won’t go into much detail. Now onward to getting flash working.

I tried downloading the 64-bit alpha version of Flash off of adobes site and placing libflashplayer.so first in:

/usr/lib64/mozilla/plugins/

Opened firefox 3.5 browsed to about:plugins and saw that it wasn’t listed. Strange‚Ķ

Let’s try putting it in:

/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/

Same result, it’s not listed‚ĶHmmm..

Maybe it’ll work if I put it in

~/firefox/plugins/

Nope!

So I decided to fire up firefox from my command line:

$ cd ~/firefox/

$./firefox

Ah! There’s the culprit right here:

LoadPlugin: failed to initialize shared library /home/smoak/.mozilla/plugins/libflashplayer.so [/home/smoak/.mozilla/plugins/libflashplayer.so: wrong ELF class: ELFCLASS64]

LoadPlugin: failed to initialize shared library /home/smoak/firefox/plugins/libflashplayer.so [/home/smoak/firefox/plugins/libflashplayer.so: wrong ELF class: ELFCLASS64]

LoadPlugin: failed to initialize shared library /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/libflashplayer.so [/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/libflashplayer.so: wrong ELF class: ELFCLASS64]

Hmm..that’s interesting it looks like its saying it can’t use the 64 bit version of flash. Aha! It turns out mozilla only carries 32 bit binary tarballs of Firefox 3.5. Ah! No wonder 64 bit flash wasn’t working ;) I was using 32 bit Firefox this whole time!

Now to fix it, I had to download the 32 bit version of flash from adobes site. Before untaring let’s get rid of the 64 bit files:

$ sudo rm /usr/lib64/mozilla/plugins/libflashplayer.so

$ sudo rm /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/libflashplayer.so

$ rm ~/firefox/plugins/libflashplayer.so

Great! Now just, untar libflashplayer.so and place it in:

/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/

Open firefox and go to about:plugins

Success! Flash is listed!
